What Hue are You? How to Choose and Use Color for Your Kitchen or Bath in Your Whole Home Remodel

pascalWhile experimenting with a palette is one of the most exciting phases of the creative design process, the number of options and combinations involved can make color selection in your new space seem daunting. Where do I start? Which colors go with each other? Are there certain colors that make more sense for the kitchen or bathroom in my whole home remodel? These are just a few of the questions we answer below.

The Big Picture
Before you start choosing color for your kitchen or bathroom, it’s important to envision the whole room. Keep in mind that color is on all the materials you choose for your space (not just the walls or tile). The combination of these elements will create a composition.

raynesThe Mood
Color has a strong influence on mood. Determining the feeling you want in your home is an essential first step in choosing colors. Consider if you want a light and airy feel, or a more intimate enclosed space, which may have darker tones. Remember that cabinetry is a significant design element in a kitchen or bath and will be one of the most important sources of color in the room.

The Details
After determining the visual feeling you want to create, select your countertop material and color: granite, wood, quartz, tile, etc. For a bathroom, you may want to select the tile style and color before your countertop, since tile is an important design statement in the room. Then choose your flooring, and finally the wall treatment, which should be in a hue that unifies all the different colors in the room. If you are daring about color, experiment with unconventional shades on permanent pieces, such as countertops, tiles and appliances or fixtures. If you want to take a more cautious route, first try playing with color in places where it can easily be changed, such as walls, art and accessories.

perryYour Individual Style
It’s helpful to understand your personal relationship to color before you start choosing colors for a room. One client tells us how much she enjoys waking up in the morning to her apple green kitchen countertops. While that color wouldn’t work for everyone, it makes her happy and invigorates her for the busy day to come!

Color inspires the imagination and brings distinct character to your home. Working with professional designers who have years of experience in creating successful color palettes, you can experiment with what works best for the kitchen or bath in your whole home remodel.
