We are excited to announce today that San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles has awarded JDR with the prestigious Kitchen of the Year honor and selected our work for the cover of their 26th Annual Kitchens of the Year June issue.
In a historical La Jolla home, the kitchen was transformed to enhance family life while honoring the essential character of the design. A couple with a close and active family life who enjoy welcoming their children and grandchildren into their home needed a substantial update to their existing kitchen. Their 1939 Colonial-style home was designed by acclaimed architect Thomas Shepherd, well known for his work in La Jolla. It was important to the clients to respect the original nature of their home while significantly increasing storage, improving navigation, and creating a stylish kitchen and breakfast nook with a more spacious feeling.
The new design honors the home’s classic American sensibility with a modern approach. To create a more open and unified space, existing beams were pushed up for a higher ceiling and upper cabinetry blocking the view from the kitchen to the breakfast nook was removed. Custom cabinetry in crisp white provides abundant organized storage. A deep navy blue walnut cabinet with intricate detailing conceals the refrigerator and side pantries while establishing an impressive focal point. Fresh and inviting, this kitchen now brings ease, comfort, and liveliness to every family gathering.
We are thrilled to have our work recognized by San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles Magazine! See more about the Kitchen of the Year here.
