Designed for a couple with a mutual love of travel and family but different tastes in color and style, this home with stunning ocean views encompasses a colorful harmony of elements. Originally dark, dated, and closed off from its surroundings, the home was completely transformed to maximize living space and to take advantage of its ideal location by creating a strong sense of indoor/outdoor living.
Significant construction was required to accomplish the goals of the new design, including adding space and reimagining existing space planning, all within the constraints of a rigorous coastal review process and the challenges of working on a steeply sloped footprint. The home now has a vastly improved curb appeal and front access, maximizes natural light, makes views central to the home’s appeal, and easily accommodates overnight guests when family visits. The inspiration for this home was melding the wife’s clean, white, and simple style with the husband’s bold and colorful style. The design now skillfully blends beach, contemporary, and rustic elements along with a dynamic color palette and bold textures.
Before
The entrance to the original home was awkwardly designed on the side of the home and built on a steep slope that was difficult to park in and navigate.
After
The garage was moved to the opposite side of the home, the slope was filled, and the exterior was designed to establish a more substantial visual presence.
The existing entry to the home was bland and unremarkable with cramped space and no connection to the outdoors.
Immediately upon opening the front door, the view to the ocean is evident in the new open design.
The existing kitchen was poorly designed with outdated cabinetry, appliances, and an awkward layout.
The new kitchen, now open to the expansive living space, combines modern and traditional elements with an emphasis on clean and simple harmony.
The awkward layout of the existing kitchen had the sink facing away from surrounding views.
In the new design, the sink faces out to the rest of the living space and the ocean views beyond.
The original kitchen was cut off from the rest of the home and from appreciation of the surrounding natural environment by a large peninsula.
The kitchen is now fully integrated with the overall design of the home, perfect when cooking and entertaining friends and family.
The original fireplace was the centerpiece of an existing family space that felt dated and confined.
The fireplace was retained and a new mantle and hearth were added. Bi-fold doors and transom windows capture natural light and open the home to stunning ocean views.
Lounging in the existing home design felt dreary and dark, especially considering the incredible natural surroundings.
The new design encompasses a cozy window seat to take full advantage of amazing views while relaxing near the fireplace with a good book.
The existing deck was taking away a significant amount of space from the interior of the home and was not used much since it was closed off from the surroundings.
The home now feels dramatically more connected to the surrounding coastal environment, embracing the concept of indoor/outdoor living.
Previously there was awkward access between the master suite and the deck.
Now an oasis for indoor/outdoor living, the deck is more strongly visually connected to the living space and master bedroom.
The existing master bedroom was cramped, with just enough room to fit the bed. Old window coverings made the space feel disconnected from the views.
Now connected visually to the spectacular surrounding views, the master bedroom feels more inviting and luxurious.
The original master bathroom was short on space and style.
The new master bathroom appeals to the senses with clean lines, simple style, and sumptuous materials.
