Playful

Modern

This extensive whole home remodel for a family relocating to San Diego transformed outdated style and a cramped layout into a stunning haven for the clients and their young son. The couple loved the location and the “bones” of the existing home but were eager for a dramatic transformation of its space planning and design. During the comprehensive remodel, the clients lived in Chicago and flew out to San Diego once a month to make materials selections and see the project progress, requiring a strong relationship of trust between clients and designer.

The clients’ love of art and emphasis on welcoming friends into inviting surroundings are evident throughout their new home design. Elements of color and texture convey a sense of coziness for a comfortable family lifestyle in a thoroughly modern design. The kitchen was relocated and walls were removed to create a more expansive space. Multiple new windows and glass doors open the home to the backyard and abundant natural light. Bright hues and interesting patterns balance with clean lines for welcoming warmth and style throughout this 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home.

Before

The original entry was dated and dreary. The clients wanted a modern design with memorable materials.

After

The entry now makes a strong design statement as dark colors contrast with the new light gray stucco and cedar siding of the exterior.
When entering the existing home, the view to the backyard was blocked and the surfaces were indicative of a 1980s design aesthetic.
The home is now dramatically more open, modern, and colorful. The impact of seeing the backyard from the front entry is emphasized.
The original living room had some design elements the clients wanted to keep but the space needed a significant style makeover to suit their artistic family lifestyle.
The new fireplace was built up to the ceiling, creating a vivid focal point with a TV that displays art when not in use. Symmetry is key to the appeal of this room.
In the existing home, the dining area was adjacent to the living space and separated from the kitchen. Walls were removed to open up the space.
Attention to detail on every surface, with textures on every neutral, brings warmth and personality to this modern kitchen.
The original kitchen cabinetry was bland and out of date. For clients who love to cook and entertain, the kitchen needed a significant transformation.
Cabinetry in the new design was selected in two finishes – lighter upper cabinetry and a darker finish below. This interesting visual contrast creates energy in a simple design.
The existing kitchen was not designed to accommodate large appliances and it was not an inspiring space for cooking.
Meticulous cabinetry design now integrates multiple appliances without detracting from the overall attention to clean uninterrupted lines.
The galley style kitchen with obtrusive elements blocked navigation and natural light.
The kitchen is now beautifully simple and clean, open to its surroundings while also well defined.
The design of the original kitchen lacked style and definition. It felt out of place in an open floor plan and its materials were bland and dated.
The kitchen now unifies with the dining space, living room, family room, and gorgeous backyard and is the heart of a vibrant home.
An existing guest bath was dull, with outdated fixtures and little attention to style.
The new bathroom makes an impression with complex textures and bold hardware.
The existing entryway was dominated by carpeted stairs and other design choices from another era.
The entryway was completely transformed with a stunning floating staircase against a backdrop of apple green.
A bland existing bathroom left a lot to be desired for clients who desired colorful, artistic surroundings.
For the bathroom used by the clients’ son, a wall of 3-D electric blue tile in the shower makes the space feel vibrant and fun.
The existing master bedroom was dark and dull. The clients wanted a stylish and relaxing retreat.
Playful geometric wallpaper with a 3-D effect is now a cool focal point. Balancing the adventurous graphic pattern with a neutral color keeps the bedroom feeling serene.
Carpeting in the original home even extended into the master bathroom. The space planning was closed off and unappealing. The clients wanted a much more organized, luxurious, and spa-like space.
The master bathroom is now exceptionally fresh and bright. A curbless shower was a choice influenced by the European bathrooms the clients experienced while traveling.
