Natural

Modern Kitchen

For a well-traveled couple with an appreciation of European aesthetics, it was important that their kitchen express a refined point of view.

They wanted to dramatically open up their kitchen and living areas and connect the space with their home’s lovely natural environment. The existing space was a series of separate areas with little relationship to each other or the outdoors. After several structural changes, including the removal of walls, windows, doors and a fireplace, one open space was established and defined by a balanced rhythm of wood beams in the ceiling.

New windows and glass doors now fill the space with light and circulation, grounded by a balance of refined and natural textures. Several types of wood are contrasted with the glossy sheen of white cabinetry and countertops. Throughout the kitchen, rectangles of white and dark colors and open and closed spaces create an intriguing visual duality. The interplay of textures with the clean lines of the open floor plan creates an engaging design for family life and entertaining in this natural modern kitchen.

Before

The original entry to the home was a cramped, dark hallway. The space was crowded and disconnected from its surroundings.

After

After several structural changes, including the removal of walls, windows, doors and a fireplace, one open space was established, filled with light.
The dark kitchen, with limited storage and awkward navigation, did little to inspire entertaining and was frustrating for people who love to cook at home.
At the new extra long island, guests gather at one end with bar seating defined by a pair of clear “bubble” lights and survey the expanse of the kitchen and living area.
In the original layout, spaces were crowded together with no relationship to each other or the outdoors. The pantry was stuck in a closet in a corner of the kitchen.

Inside the new pantry, small appliances and abundant storage create a station that resembles a second “mini kitchen” where the clients can prepare meals and store ingredients, keeping the main kitchen clutter-free.
