Behind the Scenes: We’re Featured in Modern Farmhouse Style Magazine!

When we got word from the editors of Better Homes & Gardens Modern Farmhouse Style that they wanted to feature our Boho Chic Farmhouse in their Fall 2023 issue we were excited to know that thousands of readers across the country would get to see this amazing home! We’re thrilled with how the article captures the essence of our whole home design: “A 1970s beach shack catches a new wave thanks to a creative collaboration that melds modern style and cozy comforts.”

How the Remodel Began

We first met the clients, Jessica and Brandon Price, when they were a newly married couple planning to start a family. They moved into their home within walking distance of the beach and loved the location but knew they needed much more room. They wanted to grow into a home with a modern farmhouse design and an open coastal feel. Our extensive whole home remodel doubled square footage and added a second level. The additional space, including a charming playroom, has been essential as the couple welcomed their son, Kieran. The exterior is now a clean and classic farmhouse design in modern black and white. Textured surfaces, reclaimed wood trim, and bold rattan lighting at the front door echo elements of the interior design. Inside the home, the design captures abundant natural light and fresh ocean breezes through multiple windows and glass doors. Statement boho lighting and patterned walls create individual character for each space and visual continuity for the whole home. The kitchen and dining area is open to the expansive living space and to a backyard oasis where the couple entertains friends and their family dog, Abby, can play safely.

“The renovation resulted in a two-story, four-bedroom and three-bath family home designed for a simple, breezy, indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The design team removed walls to connect living spaces and added stacking and sliding door systems that open to a concrete-and-turf patio—something the couple enjoys for entertaining and as a play space for their son.” -Modern Farmhouse Style

Photoshoot Preparation and Day of the Shoot

Working with the professionals at Modern Farmhouse Style was a joy. Seeing their meticulous attention to detail and their dedication to understanding the clients and the home design was inspiring. The JDR team met the team from Modern Farmhouse Style at the Price’s home for what we knew would be a full day of styling, lighting, framing and reviewing.

For the primary bathroom shoot for example, the stylists spent several hours getting each detail right, from lighting to accessories. We appreciated seeing the focal point tub, a 1,200 lb. beauty from Native Trails, being beautifully photographed. During the remodel, the placement of the tub required careful planning to get to the second level and to be supported from below in the construction of the home, with the entire floor engineered to accommodate it. The tub was an element that Brandon fell in love with – he wanted a “Zen Balinese” type feeling in their bathroom retreat.

We also enjoyed that Modern Farmhouse Style called out the natural stone sinks used throughout the home, one of our favorite elements of the design. The balance of natural stone, rattan, and reclaimed wood beams makes the home feel connected to nature and gives it a sense of history.

“Our modern farmhouse is well-suited for beach living,” Jessica says. “Brandon and I both appreciate its free, artsy, eclectic feel.” -Modern Farmhouse Style

The editors captured the spirit of the Prices and how they live in their home with the title of the article – “Barefoot Attitude” and their wonderful family portrait. When we started working with Jessica and Brandon, we set out to design and build a beautiful, spacious home they could grow into that would also feel in harmony with its neighborhood near the beach and the Price’s lifestyle of being at home together and enjoying their surroundings with a casual, welcoming outlook. We’re very happy that they love their home and we are proud to share our work with the readers of Modern Farmhouse Style! We’re also honored that this home has been recognized with a National CotY (Contractor of the Year) award and a Regional Chrysalis award for outstanding design.
