2023 Trend Watch: Return to Tradition Brings Old World Elegance to Kitchen Design
Comfort often comes from what we find familiar. Traditional design lends a sense of substance, history, and coziness to the home. In our annual review of emerging trends, our designers predicted seeing more traditional elements in 2023, particularly in the kitchen. Here is some inspiration for modern interpretations of design ideas that have stood the test of time!
Historical Symmetry
In the kitchen of this home on the historical register, Shaker style cabinetry is balanced with antique brass and formal details, such as the island legs and the crowns of the upper cabinetry, for a combination of rich warmth and elegance. The beamed ceilings employed throughout the new design honor the history of the home. The kitchen is now dramatically more expansive and functional, accommodating a large range with an impressive hood. The range, the granite countertops, the apron front sink, and the traditional cabinetry are a fusion of classic style inspired by the home’s historical character.
Reimagined American Colonial
Evoking classic American Colonial design, this whole home remodel for a young family in Rancho Santa Fe retains elements of its historically-inspired design while significantly transforming the space for modern family life and entertaining. In the kitchen, now substantially lighter and more modern, a wall was removed and a peninsula added in its place, while a soffit around the cabinetry brings architectural definition to the space. The carefully retained original brick flooring and a butcher block countertop add distinct character.
Elegant Tuscan
A semi-retired couple who love to cook for a healthy lifestyle and entertain on a grand scale wanted a large, welcoming kitchen with traditional elements. Symmetry is essential to the new design, which incorporates several focal points. Substantial cherry cabinetry, the meticulously crafted barrel ceiling, wrought iron corbels on the cooktop hood, and the use of natural stone combine to communicate Old World elegance.
