PROJECT SUMMARY
Designed for a couple who lived in Japan for two decades, this master bath balances the beauty of treasured memories with modern, functional space. When the husband retired from the military after 20 years stationed on the island of Okinawa in Japan, the homeowners settled in Oceanside with their three kids. They wanted their master bathroom to be a relaxing retreat from a busy family schedule, with a distinctive look reminiscent of their time overseas. The centerpiece of the new space is a deep bathtub filled from above, inspired by the traditional Japanese “furo” or “yubune.” A precursor of the American-style hot tub, the traditional furo is designed to be used less for washing and more for long, relaxing soaks. A large shower with a pebble tile floor and gleaming tile emphasizes a refined sense of simple luxury in the room.
With thoughtful space planning, lush materials, and a focus on natural light, the bathroom was completely transformed within its original footprint. Space and function were dramatically enhanced with abundant storage, including a generous linen closet. Designed as a place to relax, linger and reflect on personal memories of Japanese design, this luxurious retreat is a delight for the senses.
