PROJECT SUMMARY
The clients for this remodel were a young couple with three children. The husband has been in a wheelchair for most of his life. When they moved into the home, the family appreciated its size and its location, which offers a spectacular view, but many of the house’s features were inconvenient for the husband and interfered with his everyday life. Because the family plans to live in their house for many years to come, they decided to take the steps necessary to make the surroundings more accessible, while also adding to the beauty and livability of their space.
Jackson Design and Remodeling remodeled the kitchen, living and dining areas and created an expansive outdoor living area. We followed the clients’ desire to implement many features of universal design, while carefully avoiding a clinical appearance. The clients wanted visitors to the home to be unaware that any universal design elements were used. We created a beautiful new environment for the family, with modern lines, interesting textural elements, greatly enhanced functionality, and a design that embraces the majestic nature right outside their living area. The family loves to entertain and now has ample space to do so in comfort and style. Our design strategy embraced the essential principles of universal design: providing the same means of use for people with diverse abilities, flexibility of use, simple and intuitive design, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and size and space for approachable use. The result is a stunning home, accessible and usable for all.
